What it actually looks like

Our note
Nine is the youngest they take on this one, and the site is blunt that you need to be fit enough for four to five hours of paddling, so it suits an older youth group rather than a class outing. Only ten seats exist per day and four people have to sign up for it to run. If you have children under nine, the site says to ask about a custom trip instead.

What the children do

A full day guided kayak tour from Telegraph Cove to the boundary of the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve, with a 40 minute custom landing craft ride in one direction and two to three hours of paddling in the morning and again in the afternoon. The published rate is $400.00 CAD per person plus tax, and that is the only rate given, so children pay the same as adults. The day runs 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, group size is 4 minimum and 10 maximum, and the meeting point is Bauza Cove, Telegraph Cove. The season is July 1 to September 10. The participation page says it is suitable for children aged 9 and older, and points families with children under 9 to custom trips. Lunch, all paddling and kayak equipment and a certified guide are included.

Meet at the beach at 8:30 in the morning, ride a landing craft for about 40 minutes in one direction, and paddle a kayak for two to three hours in the morning and again in the afternoon along the Johnstone Strait shoreline. They watch for orcas, humpbacks, sea lions, porpoises, seals and eagles, look at sea stars, anemones and nudibranchs in the intertidal zone, and stop for a provided lunch before getting back around 4 in the afternoon.

Good to know

Lunch, kayaks and all paddling gear are included, the day is eight hours long and entirely outdoors on the water, and parking is at their Telegraph Cove base. There is nothing on the site about washrooms at the meeting beach, wet weather plans, how many adults have to come, or how far ahead to book, so ask when you call.
