What it actually looks like

Our note
This is the free option and needs no booking, but there is nothing indoors: the only shelter the site mentions is the café in the Grant building, which shuts at 2:30 p.m. and is closed on statutory holidays and weekends. Parking is pay parking in every campus lot, so budget for it. The gardens close early in bad weather. A wind closure notice was posted on the site the day before this check.

What the children do

Free access to the formal Italian, Japanese and rose gardens, entered through the garden booth beside Hatley Castle on College Drive. The gardens are open every day from 10 a.m. to dusk. Hatley Castle itself can only be entered on the guided tour, and dogs are not permitted inside the gated garden areas.

Walk at their own pace through three walled gardens: the symmetrical Italian garden, the Japanese garden with its pond, walking bridge and water wheel, and the rose garden, and along the paths between them.

Good to know

Free, open daily from 10 a.m. to dusk, entered at the garden booth on College Drive. Washrooms, lunch space, rain backup, stroller access and bus parking are not stated on the site.

Sources disagree. The museum page body invites visitors to explore the museum, while the same page's own summary describes the museum visit as part of the guided walking estate tour. Neither is dated, so no separate museum admission or access rule was recorded.
