What it actually looks like

Photos from Jamie's Whaling Station & Adventure Centres - Tofino's website
Our note
This is the Tofino boat that takes babies and toddlers, and the one where children can get up, move around and eat. Check in is half an hour before the boat leaves and it takes a while to get everyone off afterwards, so block out closer to four hours than three.

What the children do

A 2.5 to 3 hour whale watching trip from the Tofino dock aboard a covered cruiser, with full commentary by a certified captain and naturalists. The site lists the tour as all ages: adults $200.34, youth 13 to 18 $179.14, children 3 to 12 $168.54, and infants 2 and under free. Grey whales are the whale most often seen, with Transient (Bigg's) Killer Whales and Humpback Whales also possible, along with sea lions, sea otters, seals and eagles. The same tour is also sold as a Tofino Whale & Bear Package, which pairs it with a bear watching trip on the same day or a different day.

Sit in a heated indoor cabin with large windows, then move out to the open rear deck to watch for spouts, tails and breaching whales while a naturalist explains what is happening. Snacks and drinks are allowed on board, so they can eat and move between seats during the trip.

Good to know

There is a toilet on the boat and washrooms at the Tofino station, parking is free, and the cabin is heated and covered. No indoor lunch space on shore and no group or school rate are published, so those are worth a call.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about how many toilets are on the big Tofino whale boat. One says two, the other says one. Either way there is a toilet on board, so it only matters if you are bringing a large group of small children.
Washrooms
Depending on what vessel you are travelling on during your tour you may or may not have access to a washroom. Our larger vessels all have washrooms onboard for use. On our smaller vessels including our Zodiacs, we have small marine toilets that are for emergency use only.
Lunch space
Snacks and drinks are allowed on board the Tofino whale watching and sea otter vessels. Food and scented items are not allowed on bear watching tours. The site does not describe an indoor lunch space on shore.
Rain backup
Our tours are Rain or Shine and we ask that you check the forecast prior to arriving for your departure and dress accordingly. On occasion, if the sea conditions are too rough we will cancel or delay our departures.
