What it actually looks like

Our note
Six hours in open swell is a trip for confident older paddlers rather than a class outing. The age on this page is given two different ways, so settle it on the phone before anyone counts on coming.

What the children do

A 6 hour guided sea kayak tour from Ucluelet out of the harbour into the open swell of northern Barkley Sound, run by Paddle West Kayaking and booked by phone rather than online. The site lists it at $167 a person. The page gives two different minimum ages, 12 and up in the tour details and 4 and up in the price list. There is a stop on land for a lunch you pack yourself.

Paddle for most of a day in open ocean swell along rugged shoreline and islets, watching for seals, sea lions and eagles, with a stop on land to eat a packed lunch.

Good to know

Six hours on open water, booked by phone, at $167 a person with a packed lunch of your own. The minimum age is published two different ways on the same page, so confirm it when you call.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give different answers for when bear watching runs from Ucluelet. One says mid April to the end of September, another says April 15 to October 15. If you are looking at late September or October, check the dates when you book.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about when whale watching starts in Ucluelet. The Ucluelet page says early February, the home page says March. Worth settling when you book if you want an early spring date.
Sources disagree. The site says the Ucluelet boats take children 3 and older, but the private tour listing says all ages. If anyone under three is coming, ask whether they can be on an Ucluelet boat at all before you plan around it.
Sources disagree. The six hour kayak tour from Ucluelet is listed as ages 12 and up in the tour details and ages 4 and up in the price list on the same page. It is a long trip in open ocean swell. Settle the age on the phone before you book.
