What it actually looks like

Our note
It is two and a half to three hours on a boat with no way to get off, so it suits children who can settle in a seat. Boats have to stay 100 metres back from whales, so binoculars make a real difference. Allow about an extra hour on top of the tour for checking in beforehand and getting off afterwards.

What the children do

A 2.5 to 3 hour whale watching trip from Ucluelet into Barkley Sound aboard a covered cabin cruiser with indoor heated seating, an open rear deck and a marine toilet. The Ucluelet cruiser is the Pacific Springs, listed on the fleet page as carrying 12 passengers and suitable for ages 3 and up. Grey whales and humpbacks are the usual sightings, with sea lions, seals, sea otters and eagles along the way. If the boat does not see a whale, everyone on board gets a Raincheck Ticket for a free second tour.

Sit in a heated cabin and watch through the big windows, then step out onto the open deck at the back of the boat when the skipper finds whales. The skipper gives commentary about the whales and the coast the whole way out and back.

Good to know

There is a toilet on the boat and washrooms at the office, parking in front of the building is free, and the heated cabin means rain does not end the trip. Nothing about a school or daycare rate, a group booking route or bus parking is on the site, so it is worth a call.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give different answers for when bear watching runs from Ucluelet. One says mid April to the end of September, another says April 15 to October 15. If you are looking at late September or October, check the dates when you book.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about when whale watching starts in Ucluelet. The Ucluelet page says early February, the home page says March. Worth settling when you book if you want an early spring date.
Sources disagree. The site says the Ucluelet boats take children 3 and older, but the private tour listing says all ages. If anyone under three is coming, ask whether they can be on an Ucluelet boat at all before you plan around it.
Sources disagree. The six hour kayak tour from Ucluelet is listed as ages 12 and up in the tour details and ages 4 and up in the price list on the same page. It is a long trip in open ocean swell. Settle the age on the phone before you book.
