What it actually looks like

Our note
Children start at five and sit in front with one adult behind, so in practice you need close to one adult per child unless the guide takes one. This one is run by Paddle West Kayaking rather than Jamie's, so their 24 hour cancellation rule applies and not the 48 hour one on the boat tours. They paddle in the rain, so pack rain gear rather than expecting a postponement.

What the children do

A 2.5 hour guided sea kayak tour of the sheltered Ucluelet harbour, marked beginner friendly and priced the same for every age at $87.98. The site says it is run by Paddle West Kayaking, which it describes as a separate company from Jamie's. Kayaks, paddles, dry bags, personal flotation devices and spray skirts are provided. Groups are usually no more than six paddlers with a guide, and a tour needs at least two guests to run. There is a washroom on site at check-in.

Sit in the front of a double kayak with an adult behind and paddle around the harbour for about two and a half hours, stopping to float over kelp and look at seals, sea stars, herons and eagles while the guide explains what lives in the intertidal zone.

Good to know

There is a washroom on site at check-in, the price is the same for adults and children, and everything but clothing is provided. Nothing about a school or daycare rate is published, and seating children needs an adult per kayak, so call before you plan numbers.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give different answers for when bear watching runs from Ucluelet. One says mid April to the end of September, another says April 15 to October 15. If you are looking at late September or October, check the dates when you book.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about when whale watching starts in Ucluelet. The Ucluelet page says early February, the home page says March. Worth settling when you book if you want an early spring date.
Sources disagree. The site says the Ucluelet boats take children 3 and older, but the private tour listing says all ages. If anyone under three is coming, ask whether they can be on an Ucluelet boat at all before you plan around it.
Sources disagree. The six hour kayak tour from Ucluelet is listed as ages 12 and up in the tour details and ages 4 and up in the price list on the same page. It is a long trip in open ocean swell. Settle the age on the phone before you book.
