What it actually looks like

Our note
The height rule is the thing to check first, because 142 centimetres rules out most children under about nine regardless of the ticket price. There is no usable toilet on board and no shelter from wind or spray, so this is a harder trip than the cruiser for a young group.

What the children do

A 2.5 to 3 hour whale watching trip from Ucluelet on an open 12 passenger Zodiac with forward facing seats. Flotation suits are provided. The page states a height requirement of 4 feet 8 inches or 142 centimetres to ride, and lists the tour as unsuitable for anyone pregnant or with back, neck or knee problems, osteoporosis, incontinence, recent surgery or limited mobility. The emergency marine toilet is listed as currently unavailable. The page does not publish a minimum age, only the height rule.

Put on a full body flotation suit, sit in a forward facing seat on an open boat and hold on for a fast ride out along the coast of Barkley Sound, stopping to watch whales and other wildlife. Everyone stays in their seat for the whole trip.

Good to know

Flotation suits are provided and parking at the Ucluelet office is free, but there is no toilet on the boat and no cover from the weather. The site does not say what the youngest age is for this boat, only the height limit, so ask before you book.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give different answers for when bear watching runs from Ucluelet. One says mid April to the end of September, another says April 15 to October 15. If you are looking at late September or October, check the dates when you book.
Sources disagree. Two of their pages disagree about when whale watching starts in Ucluelet. The Ucluelet page says early February, the home page says March. Worth settling when you book if you want an early spring date.
Sources disagree. The site says the Ucluelet boats take children 3 and older, but the private tour listing says all ages. If anyone under three is coming, ask whether they can be on an Ucluelet boat at all before you plan around it.
Sources disagree. The six hour kayak tour from Ucluelet is listed as ages 12 and up in the tour details and ages 4 and up in the price list on the same page. It is a long trip in open ocean swell. Settle the age on the phone before you book.

No running, jumping, screaming, or climbing railings is permitted.. We do not recommend this tour to anyone with a history of serious medical conditions. These include, but are not limited to, anyone who is pregnant, those with back, neck or knee problems, osteoporosis, incontinence, recent surgery or limited mobility..
