What it actually looks like
Photos from Kitty Coleman Woodland Gardens's website
Our note
The whole visit is outdoors on bark paths with no stated shelter, so pick a dry day and put the group in boots. Washrooms are not mentioned anywhere on the site, so make that the first thing you ask about on the phone.
What the children do
The gardens are open daily from 9 a.m. to dusk and group reservations can be arranged one day in advance. Everyone pays the standard admission of $8 for adults, $3 for children aged 5 to 12 and nothing for under fives. No group rate, group size limit or school rate is published, and the site does not say whether adults coming with a group pay.
Walk over a mile of soft bark mulch paths looping through 24 acres of forest, past several ponds, water features and thousands of rhododendrons. There are rustic benches to stop at, a gazebo with bird feeders hung around it, and a stone labyrinth to follow.
Good to know
There is a picnic area, a gazebo and a tea room, and the gardens are open every day from 9 a.m. to dusk. Washrooms, rain shelter, stroller access and coach parking are not stated, so it is worth a call.
