What it actually looks like
Photos from Ladysmith Archives's website
Our note
This is a working research room with a big table, two computers and a microfilm reader, not a place set up for a group of children to look around. If you want a heritage outing in Ladysmith, the Society's museum on 1st Avenue is the one to ask about, and their industrial heritage site by the harbour is the other.
What the children do
Free public access to the archive's holdings in its reading room, arranged by ringing 250-245-0100 for an appointment. Volunteers help focus a search and fetch materials, and the room has a microfilm reader and printer. Members of the Society can use Ancestry.com on two computers there. Copies cost 25 cents a page. If you cannot come in person, small focused requests can be sent through the research request form on their page. Nothing on the site describes a school visit, a daycare visit or any group booking, and no age range or group size is given.
Good to know
Free to use, open weekday mornings and early afternoons, with a charge if you take copies. Washrooms, step free access, how many people can come at once and whether children are welcome are all unpublished, so ring first.
Sources disagree. Their pages do not agree on whether you can just walk in. One gives office hours of Monday to Friday, 9 to 2. Another says to phone 250-245-0100 and book a time. Ring first and you will not waste the trip.
