Our note
The obvious choice if the trip to Victoria is not on. Microphones and cameras are preferred but not required, so it works for a class watching on one screen. If you want more than one session, tell them, so they can vary the topic and avoid repeating material.
What the children do
A live online session hosted by a Parliamentary Tour Guide, with stories and photographs about the Legislative Assembly. Appropriate for students in grades 3 to 12, and they also present to community organisations. You choose either a 30 or a 45 minute session and one of four topics: BC Parliament 101, Levels of Government, How a Bill Becomes a Law, or a session for groups who have applied for a School Travel Grant. Sessions run on Zoom or Teams, with Zoom preferred, and are offered between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm Monday to Thursday. A minimum of 5 people is required. You can ask them to invite your school's MLA to join, which adds about 15 minutes.
Join a live video call from the classroom with a tour guide who shows photographs and tells stories about the Parliament Buildings. In the law making session they watch short clips of a real debate and take part in a mock parliament.
Good to know
Thirty or forty five minutes on Zoom or Teams, Monday to Thursday between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm, with at least five people. The price is not published, so ask when you book.
Sources disagree. Three of their pages give three different phone numbers for tour enquiries. They are 250 387 9243 on the school tours page, 250 387 1771 on the Little Legislators page and 250 387 6668 on the general tour information page. Email tours@leg.bc.ca is given consistently on all three, so that is the safer first try.
Washrooms
If possible, plan to use washrooms prior to your arrival as the public washrooms in the Parliament Buildings are not well suited to large groups. If it is not possible, please let your guide know that you would like a washroom break included as part of the tour.
