What it actually looks like

Photos from McLean Mill National Historic Site's website
Our note
This is the fallback when the site is closed for the season, and it is genuinely just a walk outdoors with nothing open, no washrooms and nobody on duty. Signs mark what is off limits, and children need an adult close by around the pond and the machinery. There is a dog living on the premises, worth knowing if anyone in the group is nervous of dogs.

What the children do

The grounds are open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year, to explore at your own risk, with no admission charge and no staff on site. While the site is closed for the season the administration office, the heritage buildings, the gift shop and the washrooms are all shut. Leashed pets are welcome. The site gives access to a variety of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, including the Log Train Trail.

Walk the roads and paths of the mill site in the open air, past the outsides of the heritage buildings and around the log pond, and carry on to the trails that run off the site.

Good to know

Free, outdoors and open every day from dawn to dusk. Nothing else is open while the site is closed for the season, so there are no washrooms, no shelter and no staff, and bus parking is not stated.

Sources disagree. Their pages give two different phone numbers for tour enquiries. One is 250-723-1376, the other is 250-724-6535 and is the one their home page gives for the off season. If one does not get answered, try the other, and email is the route they ask for anyway.
Washrooms
Except for the R.B. McLean house, that has been rebuilt as a modern facility and contains public washrooms, the other buildings have been partially restored. Access to indoor washrooms (during open hours, no showers). While the site is closed for the season the washrooms are closed.
