Our note
The workshop costs nothing, but getting the class to the beach is on you and that is the part that will decide whether you can run it. Block off most of a school day, because four to five hours with a beach in the middle is a long stretch for younger children. Ask which beach they have in mind before you book the bus.
What the children do
A workshop on the connection between people and aquatic ecosystems, covering local watersheds, water pollution, biodiversity, marine food webs and human impacts in the biosphere region. It is made up of a presentation, classroom activities on marine food webs and water pollution, and a beach seine at a local beach or at the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. The site says the whole thing runs about 4 to 5 hours, and that the materials can be modified to suit the class's availability. It is free, but the class arranges and pays for its own travel to the beach.
Sit for a presentation and then work at tables on marine food webs and water pollution. The rest of the day is spent on a beach, pulling a seine net through the shallows and looking at what comes up in it.
Good to know
Half of this is indoors in your own classroom and half is on an open beach, so plan for weather, footwear and a change of clothes. Nothing is published about washrooms at the beach, lunch, or how many adults have to come, so ask when you book.
