What it actually looks like

Our note
The boat is the part children remember, and it is also the part they lose in bad weather. If the forecast is icy or wet, ask what happens to that half hour before you get on the bus.

What the children do

A two hour program on the experiences of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, told through local families, with a tour on board the restored cod fishing boat Soyokaze. Thirty minutes is outdoors, and the museum cannot board the boat in ice or heavy rain.

Go aboard a restored wooden fishing boat, then practise origami and try writing with a Japanese phonetic alphabet.

Good to know

Washrooms and a picnic area on site, and the building itself is wheelchair accessible. Part of this one is outside and there is nothing published about a wet weather plan, so ask when you book.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different grade ranges for the colonization program. One says grades 8 to 12 and the booking form says 6 to 12. If you have a grade 6 or 7 class, ask before you count on it.
Sources disagree. They give two different grade ranges for the archaeology program, one starting at grade 7 and one at grade 6. A grade 6 class may or may not be eligible, so check when you book.
Sources disagree. The Haig-Brown tour is described as two hours in one place and one hour in another. Plan your bus for the longer one and confirm the length when you book.
