Our note
The whole visit is outdoors on your feet with nothing to sit on, so plan for weather and shoes. Ask what the $45 covers when you call, because their other group page charges $10 a head instead.

What the children do

A guided walking history tour of Ross Bay Cemetery for a school class or other children's group. Prepared tours include a general tour of the cemetery, a BC history tour, a gold rush tour, an Emily Carr tour and a women's history tour, and the guides will build a tour around a teacher's own topic. The site says the tours suit Grade 4 and up and links them to Art, Drama, English Language Arts and Social Studies. To book, leave a message on the voice mail at 250 598 8870 with the topic, preferred date and time, grade level and group size, or use the form on their school tours page. A teacher's kit and a self guided map are also available for classes coming on their own.

Walk through the cemetery with a guide, stopping at graves and monuments while the guide tells the stories of the people buried there.

Good to know

An outdoor walking tour with no washrooms, indoor lunch space or wet weather plan mentioned anywhere on the site. Their tours stay on paved paths and a private bus can drive into the cemetery on weekdays, so ask about drop off when you book.

Sources disagree. Their school page charges one flat $45 for the whole tour and their private group page charges $10 a person. Which one applies to a class of children is not spelled out. Worth settling when you book, because for 25 children the difference is large.
