What it actually looks like

Photos from Remote Passages Marine Excursions's website
Our note
The site recommends this for 12 and over, so it is a school age trip rather than a preschool one. Four hours of paddling plus a rainforest walk is a real day of effort, and a medium level of fitness is the stated requirement. Twelve paddlers is the ceiling for one departure, so a class will need more than one sailing.

What the children do

A four hour guided paddle from Tofino across to Meares Island through hidden inlets and past forested islands, including a walk with the guide on the Big Tree Trail and an introduction to Clayoquot Sound's rainforest ecology and local history. The site recommends it for persons 12 and over. The rate is $135 plus 5% GST, a $3 trail fee for the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks Society and a $3 research and education fee. Trips run daily from April to mid October, with the departure time varying according to the tide. No experience is needed and a medium level of fitness is required. The guide ratio is 6 paddlers to 1 guide, with a maximum of 12 paddlers and 2 guides departing at once.

Learn to paddle on land first, then paddle for a couple of hours across to Meares Island, land, and walk the Big Tree Trail boardwalk among old growth cedar with the guide before paddling back. On the mudflats at low tide there are eagles and migratory birds to spot.

Good to know

All the kayaking gear is provided, parking is free and the boathouse has restrooms, a dress-in area and hot drinks afterwards. There is no washroom on the water or on the trail, and lunch space, bus parking and a wet weather plan are not stated, so it is worth a call.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give two different answers for when tours actually run. One says the season is February to November, while the booking request form will only take dates between April 1 and October 15. If you are looking at the shoulder months, worth settling when you book.
Sources disagree. The youngest child they will take depends on which boat you get. The open Zodiac prices children from 5, and the covered cabin boat is the one they describe as suitable from age 3. Ask for the cabin boat by name when you book a group of little ones.
