What it actually looks like

Photos from Remote Passages Marine Excursions's website
Our note
The site's own answer on the youngest age names a For Families two and a half hour paddle for children 5 and over, but that trip is not in the rate table, so phone and ask whether this Islands paddle is the family one before you assume the ages match. Twelve paddlers is the hard ceiling for one departure, and children will almost certainly need to share a double with an adult. The start time moves with the tide, so it can land in the early evening.

What the children do

A two and a half hour guided paddle from Tofino out to the outer coast islands through the protected water of Tofino harbour and nearby inlets, with stories about the Clayoquot Island characters and frequent early evening wildlife sightings. The rate is $83 plus 5% GST and a $3 research and education fee. Trips run daily from April to mid October and the departure time varies with the tide, so the same tour is sometimes scheduled as a Sunriser or a Sundowner. Every trip starts with a training session on land, no experience is needed, and the guide ratio is 6 paddlers to 1 guide with a maximum of 12 paddlers and 2 guides departing at once. All basic kayaking gear is provided, down to water shoes. A group discount is offered but the site asks you to contact them for it.

Start on land with a paddling lesson, then sit in a single or double kayak and paddle out of Tofino harbour to the outer islands, listening to the guide's stories and watching for birds and wildlife along the way.

Good to know

All the kayaking gear is provided, parking is free and the boathouse has restrooms, a dress-in area and hot drinks afterwards. There is no washroom once you are on the water, and lunch space, bus parking and what happens in bad weather are not stated, so it is worth a call.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give two different answers for when tours actually run. One says the season is February to November, while the booking request form will only take dates between April 1 and October 15. If you are looking at the shoulder months, worth settling when you book.
Sources disagree. The youngest child they will take depends on which boat you get. The open Zodiac prices children from 5, and the covered cabin boat is the one they describe as suitable from age 3. Ask for the cabin boat by name when you book a group of little ones.
