Our note
This is a holiday package sold per person rather than a class trip, and the price is in the thousands, so it is unlikely to fit a school or daycare budget. Two of their own pages give different discounts for children aged 10 to 16, so get the child rate in writing before you commit.

What the children do

A four day, three night all inclusive stay in cabins at Sointula Lodge on Malcolm Island, starting on a Sunday or a Wednesday and taking a maximum of 12 guests. The itinerary is a cultural afternoon in Alert Bay including a guided tour of the U'mista Cultural Centre, a grizzly and black bear viewing day trip, a river boating day, and a wildlife safari on the last morning before returning to Port McNeill at about 4:00 pm. The published 2026 price is $5,333 per person plus GST based on double occupancy, and the 2027 price is $5,760. Lodging, all meals, guided tours, transport, evening activities and a $100 per person salmon stewardship fee are included. Guests meet at the Port McNeill office for a 1:00 pm departure.

Stay three nights in a cabin in the forest, travel out by boat each day to watch bears and other wildlife, visit the U'mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay, and ride upriver on a smaller boat. In the evenings there is storytelling and optional activities such as a traditional bone game or dancing, archery, horseshoes, kayaking and paddle boarding.

Good to know

The dates, the itinerary, the meeting place, the deposit and the cancellation ladder are all published, and the package covers lodging, meals, tours and transport. There is no stated minimum age and the children's rate is given two different ways, so both need checking by phone or email.

Sources disagree. Two of their pages give different prices for children aged 10 to 16 on the lodge package. One says 60 percent of the adult price, the other says 40 percent. Get the number confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.
