Living History Tour for groups
What it actually looks like
What the children do
A guided tour led by veteran volunteers, built around the museum's artifacts and themed exhibits and the stories of local people caught up in global events. Tours run from 60 minutes to 2 hours depending on what the group is interested in, and can be tailored from a general overview to a single topic. The tour itself is free. Requests go through a form on the bookable tours page, which asks for a preferred date and time and for the number of people, age range and any accessibility needs. Topics on offer include the First World War, the Second World War, the Cold War and Nanaimo's Diefenbunker, segregation and internment, and peacekeeping. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, and also opens by request.
Walk through the galleries with a veteran volunteer, stopping at themed displays and looking closely at artifacts, medals and uniforms in the cases. Replica objects and photographs can be brought out to handle during the tour.
Good to know
Free parking on site with ramp access from the upper lot, and Piper Park is right next door. Washrooms, somewhere to eat lunch and bus parking are not mentioned anywhere, so it is worth a call.
