Insect kit rental for the classroom
What it actually looks like
What the children do
Kits of preserved specimens set in durable acrylic resin, rented by the week and collected and returned at the zoo. The 27 piece arthropod kit is $75.00 a week. The two smaller kits, What is an Insect and What is an Arthropod, are $25.00 a week each or $35.00 for both. A 10 piece insect orders kit is $40.00 a week. Small add ons such as the fly life cycle or millipede versus centipede are $10.00 each a week, larger ones such as the honeybee or butterfly life cycle are $15.00 each a week. A live metamorphosis add on gives every child in the class a mealworm to keep and costs $15 a class, with deli cups a further $1.00 each if you want them. Every kit comes with information sheets and activity sheets. They ask for a few weeks notice so they can be sure the kit you want is free.
Pick up the mounted specimens and turn them over to look at them from all sides, and work through the activity sheets that come with the kit. With the live add on each child feeds and cares for their own mealworm until it turns into a beetle.
Good to know
Prices are for the kit for a week, not for each child, and pick up and drop off are at the zoo on Courtney Street. Nothing is published about how many specimens suit which age.
