What it actually looks like

Our note
The price is for the session rather than for each child, so a full class costs the same as half of one. Ask how much handling your group size will actually get, because they say it drops off as the group grows. For under fives, take the two shorter sittings instead of the hour.

What the children do

An educator brings live animals to a school, summer camp or daycare anywhere in the Greater Victoria Region. They typically bring a millipede, a cockroach, an arachnid and several stick insects. A session runs an hour, and up to three sessions can be booked at one location on the same day. For younger children who will not sit for a full hour they can split the group into two 30 minute sessions instead. The presentation has to happen indoors with all windows and doors shut so the animals can come out, and they say the larger the group, the less animal handling can take place. They list capacity as unlimited. Visits run Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, and outside that may cost more. Indigenous groups get 10 per cent off outreach visits.

Sit together in their own room while an educator brings out a millipede, a cockroach, an arachnid and stick insects one at a time, and hold the ones that can be handled.

Good to know

They come to you, so the room and the washrooms are your own. It has to be an indoor room with the windows and doors shut, and there is a mileage charge on top of the session fee.

Sources disagree. Their pages give different opening hours. One says 10 to 5 every day, another says 11 to 4 on weekdays and 10 to 4 at weekends. They also say the hours change through the year, so ring before you fix a departure time.
Sources disagree. The masks required quiet hour on Wednesday is listed as 10 to 11 in one place and 11 to 12 in another. If a mask rule matters to your group either way, check which hour it is when you book.
