What it actually looks like

Our note
This is a real day outdoors, not a tour, so children need closed toed shoes, rain gear and a full change of clothes. Your group has to supply one adult per activity group, a certified first aid attendant and a vehicle to act as the emergency car. The prices on their fees page are from 2017, so ask for a current quote when you enquire.

What the children do

A full day at Camp Thunderbird run by camp instructors. Teachers arrange students into activity groups of 10 to 14, and each group rotates through three or four sessions chosen with the camp, from canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, rock climbing, archery, orienteering, hiking, teambuilding, low ropes, campcraft, owl pellet dissection and nature walks. Arrival is 9:00am and departure is 4:00pm. You either bring your own lunch or pay more to eat in the dining hall. New for 2026 there is an extended day option running 9am to 7:30pm that adds dinner and an evening campfire. Swimming is not offered to day groups because of the time the swim challenge takes. French programming is available for groups of up to 55 participants.

Children spend the whole day outdoors in a small group with a camp instructor, moving between three or four activities. They paddle a canoe or kayak on Glinz Lake, shoot on an outdoor archery range, work through teambuilding challenges and walk forest trails. They eat lunch in the dining hall or at a picnic area outside, then finish the afternoon with a big group game such as Capture the Flag.

Good to know

Washrooms, a dining hall and indoor halls are on site, and lunch is either yours to bring or theirs to provide for more. Rain arrangements are not published and the price is years out of date, so both are worth a call.

Sources disagree. Their own pages give two different answers for how many adults have to come on an overnight stay. One says one adult per nine children, the other says one per eight. We use one per eight, from their 2026 teacher booklet. Worth settling when you book, because it changes how many staff you need.
Sources disagree. The price for bringing camp staff to your school is confusing on their own page. The column is labelled as a price for each participant, but the rows are priced by group size, so it reads as a price for the whole group. We have taken it as the whole group. Confirm the total before you commit.
Sources disagree. Three different phone numbers for the camp appear across their pages. We use the one their camp page calls the new number. If it does not connect, the older camp line and the main Y office number are both still listed.
Sources disagree. The same camp address is written two ways on their own pages, one ending in ca and one in com. We use the ca version, which is what the rest of their site uses. If one bounces, try the other.
Washrooms
The three Animal Cabins have a 3-piece washroom in cabin. The yurts have a shower and washroom house nearby, and the Shrub Cabins have a shower house and outhouse nearby.
Lunch space
Day groups can choose to eat in the dining hall or bring their own lunches, which are enjoyed in a picnic area at camp.
